Did you know that a 3/4 inch layer of polyester concrete will protect a bridge for 50 years? New York State Thruway Authority officials I spoke with on Friday say that’s a fact. They say the special concrete used on many bridges can withstand salt and many harsh chemicals. The concrete is sealed onto the road so tight, harmful liquids won’t seep through and ruin other parts of the bridge, like the steel frames. But just because the layer of concrete is thin, doesn’t mean the process is easy. The particular project I went to started in April and should be finished mid November this year. Crews are rehabilitating the northbound South Grand Island Bridge. There have been many delays during the last couple of months and drivers are frustrated. However officials say they understand construction is a pain in the neck for drivers who travel over the bridge and they appreciate people’s patience. After all, the “inconvenience” is making the bridge safer.
